Online form filling for Mumbai University senate polls begins

The online form filling process for the senate elections of the University of Mumbai has already started to heat up as student wings of political parties get ready for the possible October battle. According to senators, the new rules applicable from these elections will keep out old senators and hence an interesting battle will be in the offing. The MU issued a circular announcing the start of the online enrollment of voters on Tuesday and the process will go on from July 1 to 31.

Speaking about the outgoing senate, senator Sanjay Wairal said that the decision to have an online enrolment process was a welcome one as it did away with the manual form filling exercises that student bodies had to do in the past. “Enrolling graduates was a huge task in the past as student bodies had to go around to help graduates desirous of getting enrolled in the electoral roll. This process was long-drawn and due to minor mistakes while filling the forms, they got rejected. The online enrolment process is a welcome move as it does away with paper work,” said Mr Wairal.

With the rule of senators not being able to continue for more than three consecutive terms being in force, many existing senators will be going out. Hence, the student wings will be trying their best to retain the seats by getting maximum enrolments. However, after there was some resentment from some of the students’ wings to the online enrolment procedure, the university has decided to allow the process to be held offline too.

The procedure for enrolment for various other constituencies like principals, teachers, postgraduate teachers, head of department and management representative will also be held simultaneously.

When asked about the probable date for the senate elections, Dr M.A. Khan, registrar, MU said, “The date for the elections will be announced only after the enrolment process is over and everything is in order,” said Dr Khan. The term of the outgoing senate will come to an end on August 31.
