WIMBLEDON, England — Dustin Brown stands 6 feet 5 inches, with dreadlocks about half that long, and is listed at a lithe 172 pounds. He has a large tattoo of his father over his left rib cage, has rings in his ears and speaks English with a German-Caribbean accent.

He grew up in Germany and Jamaica, with parents from each of those countries, spent several years living in a camper van and driving around Europe to play tournaments, and used to string other players’ rackets for extra cash.

All of that sounds unusual to some, especially at a staid tennis establishment like Wimbledon. But not to Brown, whose Twitter handle isDreddyTennis.

“It’s difficult for me when people ask me about myself because for me it is normal,” Brown, 30, said to a roomful of reporters. “I could be sitting here and saying, ‘Why are you guys all different?’ ”

What is a little different is that Brown, ranked No. 102, has found a knack for beating Rafael Nadal, which he did on Thursday for the second time in two opportunities.

For the second time in two tries, Brown beat Nadal, the 10th seed, on grass. This time it was on Centre Court at Wimbledon, and after his 7-5, 3-6, 6-4, 6-4 victory over Nadal, the No. 10 seed, Brown bounced around the grounds from one interview to another, with a modified Superman logo on his T-shirt, and accepted cheers and hugs from fans and fellow players, like Gaël Monfils.

John McEnroe, the former No. 1-ranked player who is an analyst for BBC, said it was one of the finest performances he had seen by a low-ranked player on Centre Court.

Online form filling for Mumbai University senate polls begins

The online form filling process for the senate elections of the University of Mumbai has already started to heat up as student wings of political parties get ready for the possible October battle. According to senators, the new rules applicable from these elections will keep out old senators and hence an interesting battle will be in the offing. The MU issued a circular announcing the start of the online enrollment of voters on Tuesday and the process will go on from July 1 to 31.

Speaking about the outgoing senate, senator Sanjay Wairal said that the decision to have an online enrolment process was a welcome one as it did away with the manual form filling exercises that student bodies had to do in the past. “Enrolling graduates was a huge task in the past as student bodies had to go around to help graduates desirous of getting enrolled in the electoral roll. This process was long-drawn and due to minor mistakes while filling the forms, they got rejected. The online enrolment process is a welcome move as it does away with paper work,” said Mr Wairal.

With the rule of senators not being able to continue for more than three consecutive terms being in force, many existing senators will be going out. Hence, the student wings will be trying their best to retain the seats by getting maximum enrolments. However, after there was some resentment from some of the students’ wings to the online enrolment procedure, the university has decided to allow the process to be held offline too.

The procedure for enrolment for various other constituencies like principals, teachers, postgraduate teachers, head of department and management representative will also be held simultaneously.

When asked about the probable date for the senate elections, Dr M.A. Khan, registrar, MU said, “The date for the elections will be announced only after the enrolment process is over and everything is in order,” said Dr Khan. The term of the outgoing senate will come to an end on August 31.

For PM Modi's Digital India Push, An Audience of 10,000

NEW DELHI:  Prime Minister Narendra Modi will present the government's roadmap to digitise India when he inaugurates Digital India Week at a big function in Delhi today. 10,000 guests, including top business leaders like Mukesh Ambani of Reliance and the Tata Group's Cyrus Mistry, are expected to attend.

Here are the latest developments in the story:

1. The Prime Minister will unveil various government schemes under the Digital India programme like the Digital Locker, e-education and e-health at the event. The digital locker aims at minimising use of physical documents and enabling sharing of e-documents across agencies.
2. The PM will hold a video conference with two village panchayats in Madhya Pradesh. An official said ten village panchayats, in a 35-km area from Indore, will be connected with high-speed internet service under the project today.
3. Telecom Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad has said the government expects "billions of dollars in investment," during the week.
4. Among other top business leaders who have confirmed participation are Sunil Bharti Mittal of Bharti, Chairman of Sterlite Technologies Anil Agarwal and Aditya Birla Group chairman Kumaramangalam. Airbus India and Wipro will also attend.
5. Confirmation has also been received from foreign forms like Nidec Corporation of Japan and Taiwan-based, Delta Electronic, whose CEO Ping Cheng will attend.
6. Announcing the event, Mr Prasad said his ministry also reached out to Microsoft's Bill Gates and CEO Satya Nadella along with Infosys co-founder N R Narayana Murthy, but they will not be able to attend due to other engagements.
7. The Digital India initiative, approved last year, includes projects worth over Rs. 1,00,000 crore to transform the country into a digitally empowered knowledge economy.
8. The projects aim at ensuring that government services are available to citizens electronically so that people get the benefit of the latest information and communication technology.
9. Digital India aims to connect all gram panchayats by broadband internet. Work to connect 335 village panchayats is nearing completion, an official said.
10. Digital India Week will also see school children and others all over the country introduced to modern telecommunication techniques.

Defending 'victim' Lalit Modi: The BJP is rallying around LaMo to protect its ownComments

Lalit Modi should be a happy man today because it’s not Vasundhara Raje and Sushma Swaraj who thought that he needed the patronage of a foreign country to keep away from Indian law, but the BJP itself. Increasingly, the BJP seems to be asserting the claim that he is a victim.

Also lined up to support this interesting argument are celebrity-columnists such as Shobhaa De and Tavleen Singh. Shobhaa De wants her readers to “think of him as a victim and not the villain”  while Tavleen says that there are no charges against him, implying him that he broke no law and is not a fugitive as the media paints him. This is exactly what Lalit Modi himself is claiming.

Let’s first look at the bizarre chances that the BJP is taking. It was the party spokesperson GVL Narasimha Rao, who came up with the idea that Lalit Modi was a victim of the previous UPA regime. Participating in prime time TV discussions, he had no qualms in postulating his victim theory. Even while asserting that his government will pursue the investigation against Lalit Modi, he echoed the latter’s theory that he was being hounded by the UPA because he exposed Sashi Tharoor’s alleged deals in the IPL.

Another regular spokesperson, Sambit Patra, also said almost the same thing. While he didn’t overtly support Lalit Modi’s or Rao’s claims of victimhood, he used a document that the evasive former IPL commissioner happily refers to - the Delhi High Court verdict restoring his Indian passport. On more than one channel discussion, Patra quoted the court order to repeat a central argument that Modi has been making - that he was not running away from the law and the Enforcement Directorate could have interrogated him through video conferencing.

What Patra, however conceals is the fact that his government hadn’t appealed against it in the Supreme Court, which meant that for the BJP, it was the final word. By not appealing against the order and by quoting from it only strengthens Lalit Modi’s argument. The simultaneous assertion that “we will certainly bring him to India” was clearly forked tongue.

The clever spins by Rao and Patra are classic BJP-double speak that seeks to express two contrasting arguments in the same breath - whether it’s Vajpayee’s stand on the nuclear bomb during his first term in office (we are the only ones with the courage, but others too were open), LK Advani’s regret over Babri Masjid demolition (an original accused still not cleared by the SC saying in 2005 that the masjid demolition was the “saddest day in his life”) or Narendra Modi’s commitment to secularism (speaking for secularism at UNESCO in Paris and mocking “secularists” later in Germany).

The BJP’s victim theory and Patra’s argument that he could have been questioned on video conferencing need a closer reading. As this report shows there are more than two dozen cases of financial irregularities and money laundering, and criminal cases filed against Lalit Modi by various investigative agencies in the country. Some other reports put this number at 20 and all of them are grave charges.

'MTV Roadies X2' winner reveals strange details about the show

New Delhi: Chandigarh-based Prince Narula, winner of stunt reality show 'MTV Roadies X2', is glad the season was without fights, abuses and vulgarity, and focussed on the assigned tasks.

The show, which started its journey with auditions in December last year, witnessed various changes -- starting from the new concept to gang leaders and groups. For the first time, it was shot without Raghu Ram and Rajiv Lakshman, who were judges and mentors in the past editions.

The 24-year-old hails from a business family, but he always aimed to make a name in the world of showbiz.

Now, as the winner of a show as popular as 'Roadies', he is happy and closer to his dream.

A fitness enthusiast, Prince wants to be an actor, "especially an action hero like Akshay Kumar".

"I never thought of winning the show. I just wanted to be part of it to come into the limelight. However, winning has become an added advantage,” he added.
